MONTE SANT’ ANGELO COLLEGE

Catherine McAuley was committed to the education of women and girls.  Today, this commitment is carried on together with committed colleagues at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney.

Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College stands as the oldest independent girls school on Sydney’s North Shore, it provides secondary education for girls from a wide variety of backgrounds and reflects the growing multi-culturalism of Australia.

Monte provides girls with a quality education rich in diversity of opportunity. Its program includes the International Baccalaureate.  Students are encouraged to realise their potential within a strong, nurturing community based on Mercy values.  They are prepared for life by challenging them both academically and spiritually and motivating them to make a positive contribution to their world.

The Mater

HISTORY

The Sisters of Mercy, were founded in Dublin in 1831. With the help of a group of like-minded women, heiress Catherine McAuley used her considerable inheritance to open the first House of Mercy in Dublin in 1827, to serve the needs of destitute women and children. The women soon formed a new order, and in 1831 the first Sisters of Mercy were professed.

Nursing the sick was among the activities to be undertaken by the Sisters, as well as educational work, visitation, relief of the poor and care of orphanages and nursing homes. From the outset, nursing formed a core part of the Mercy mission, based on the healing ministry of Jesus. The name Mater Misericordiae translates as 'Mother of Mercy.

The Mater Hospital was founded and sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney. Today, although the number of Sisters actively working in the hospital is few, the legacy of Catherine McAuley - the spirit of Mercy - is carried on through the creation and delivery of excellent health related services, with an extra dimension of caring.

Today, The Mater  is a centre for surgical and medical excellence, with a growing reputation in the core services of: -

•    Cancer Care
•    Joint Replacement, bone and sports injuries
•    Maternity and women’s health
•    Heart, lung and vascular services

In addition, the Mater offers general surgery and includes a day surgery centre, intensive care, endoscopy unit and renal dialysis centre, all providing the latest in medical technology.

Unique to the Mater is the compassionate and caring culture that gives individual attention to patients’ needs for healing mind, body and spirit.

Beliefs and Values

With the healing mission of Jesus as our foundation and inspiration, we at the Mater work together in a professional, caring and compassionate manner to provide with consistency the highest quality health care for our patients and the community in keeping with the traditions and values of the Sisters of Mercy.
The Mater stands for:

Compassion
Compassion is demonstrated when we provide care for the total person with empathy, acceptance and understanding.
Justice
Justice is exercised when all are regarded equally and with integrity.
Dignity
Each person is respected when they are recognised as having an inherent dignity and worth.
Excellence
Our striving to be excellent is characterised by innovation and a desire to improve the quality of our service continually.
Mercy
It is mercy that characterises the way we serve. We see another in need, we are touched with compassion, we act to bring relief and then afterwards we continue to sustain them.
Hospitality
Our hospitality is displayed in the warm and caring way we treat all patients and visitors.

The Mercy Foundation

HISTORY

The Foundation was established in the spirit of Catherine McAuley, who responded to the needs of her times in a practical and generous way.  It was launched on 24th September 1990.

MISSION

Animated by the Gospel and Catherine McAuley’s passion for justice, the Mercy Foundation is a vehicle for continuing the work of the Congregation with people in the community who are poor, oppressed or marginalised.
(Constitution of the Mercy Foundation Ltd).

In 2007 the priorities of the Foundation were re-assessed and the decision was taken to focus on women and children particularly those affected by homelessness and mental illness.
